Gateway Into Mythic Fiction
Here you can find some great mythic fiction to read, and limited-time special offers from independent authors.
Thanks to the richness of its legends, as told in the Eddas and a host of poetic sagas, Norse Mythology is as popular as ever. JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga was stuffed with Norse inspiration and elevated the thing to a whole new dimension. Now you can read modern tales from these same legends.
I Bring the Fire Part I : Wolves

The mythologies of the indigenous peoples comprise many bodies of traditional narratives associated with religion from a mythographical perspective. Such spiritual stories are deeply based in Nature and are rich with the symbolism of seasons, weather, plants, animals, earth, water, sky and fire. The principle of an all embracing, universal and omniscient Great Spirit, a connection to the Earth, diverse creation narratives and collective memories of ancient ancestors are common. Traditional worship practices are often a part of tribal gatherings with dance, rhythm, songs and trance.

Aztec mythology is the body or collection of myths of Aztec civilization of Central Mexico and much of it is similar to that of other Mesoamerican cultures. According to legend, the various groups who were to become the Aztecs arrived from the north into the Anahuac valley around Lake Texcoco. The location of this valley and lake of destination is clear – it is the heart of modern Mexico City – but little can be known with certainty about the origin of the Aztec. Popular in modern culture are the gods Quetzalcoatl in stories by Lovecraft and in anime Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Xolotl in the video game Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Māori myths present ideas about the creation of the universe and the origins of gods and of people. The mythology accounts for natural phenomena, the weather, the stars and the moon, the fish of the sea, the birds of the forest, and the forests themselves. “Perhaps the most distinctive feature of myth, as distinct from tradition, is its universality. Each of the major myths is known in some version not only throughout New Zealand but also over much of Polynesia as well” (Biggs 1966:448).

The mythology of Japan has a long history dating back 2000 years. Part of two major religious traditions: Shinto, an indigenous religion, and Buddhism, which developed in India and came to Japan from China and Korea. It includes a vast number of gods, goddesses, and spirits. Some describe characters and events in real places in Japan, whereas others are set in legendary locations like the heavens or the underworld. Popular in modern culture through anime and manga, but also influencing a smattering of video games like Final Fantasy, Pokemon. Creatures like Oni (demon) and Shinigami (Death Note) are a mainstay of pop culture.

The myths and legends of Scotland have a “local colour” as they tell about the way of life during the olden times, apart from giving a perspective of the nature of the country during various seasons of the year. They are dominated by goddesses (Hags), and according to Donald Mackenzie “they are greater and stronger than the gods”. Popular mythological creatures in modern culture are the Loch Ness Monster, Cat Sidhe in The Dresden Files, Brownies in The Spiderwick Chronicles and Changelings in movies and books.

The Sumerian religion influenced Mesopotamian mythology as a whole, surviving in the mythologies and religions of the Hurrians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and other culture groups. The majority of Sumerian deities belonged to a classification called the Anunna (“[offspring] of An”), whereas seven deities, including Enlil and Inanna, belonged to a group of “underworld judges” known as the Anunnaki (“those from heaven (An) who came to earth (Ki)”). Popular in modern fiction is the Epic Of Gilgamesh which is considered a predecessor to most of the hero-tales ever told, even influencing Homer, Noah’s flood in Genesis and the concept of the Garden of Eden.

While the stories told in each book are generally comparable in most respects, important differences sometimes emerge, as many stories are not mentioned at all and others concentrate on the Islamic moral or spiritual significance of events rather than the details. Although there are innumerable variations of the Arthurian legend, the basic story has remained the same. Arthur, the illegitimate son of king Uther Pendragon and Igraine, reigning in his court at Camelot, proved to be a noble king and a mighty warrior. He was the possessor of the miraculous sword Excalibur, given to him by the mysterious Lady of the Lake. At Arthur’s death Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur into the lake; a hand rose from the water, caught the sword, and disappeared. Another sword, sometimes mistakenly identified with Excalibur, was drawn from a stone by Arthur to prove his royalty. Popular in modern culture in Disney’s The Sword and the Stone, in movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail and in TV series like BBC’s Merlin.
