Saint Valentine’s day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. The classic symbol, that of Eros or Cupid, a cherubic little angel with a bow and arrow that strikes people and makes them fall in love has deep origins in many mythologies.
Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in most Western countries despite the Christian origins, even in some East Asian countries such as China and South Korea.
The modern cliché Valentine’s Day poem can be found in the collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton’s Garland (1784):
The rose is red, the violet’s blue,
The honey’s sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou’d be you.
So #Cupid it is for all mythology fans out there, and let’s celebrate the day of love.
